Instructional Strategies for Math:
- Supplement reading with realia: pictures, models, etc
- Use lots of VISUALS with vocabulary
- Be alert to language, concepts, and values that are unclear in written material
- Do not assume that because the student isn’t asking questions, he understands
- Ensure understanding by questioning students
- Show students how to use table of contents, index, and glossary
- Give them needed information such as page number, terms, paragraph number, chapter, etc. in written context
- Understand cultural information about child
- Ensure understanding of number words…have students prepare glossary of Math terms
10. Ensure understanding of graphs, charts, etc.
11. Be specific with academic language: (specific to math..less than, greater, point, base, intersection, etc)
12. Teach sequence words…. First, then, next, following….when doing word problems
13. Prepare vocabulary cards
14. Use graphic organizers
15. Pair student with buddy
16. Pronounce student name correctly
