Social Studies Accommodations


Instructional Strategies for Social Studies:

  1. Supplement reading with films, globes, maps, charts and realia

  1. Use lots of VISUALS with vocabulary

  1. Be alert to language, concepts, and values that are unclear in written material

  1. Ensure understanding by questioning students

  1. Show students how to use table of contents, index, and glossary

  1. Give them needed information such as page number, terms, paragraph number, chapter, etc. in written context

  1. Understand cultural information about child

  1. Show how to use and understand timelines

  1. Be specific with academic language: (specific to SS)

10. Teach sequence words…. First, then, next, following….

11. Prepare vocabulary cards

12. Use graphic organizers

13. Pair student with buddy

14. Pronounce student name correctly
